Patient Admissions

The number of patients admitted to Minnesota's acute care hospitals increased overall by 3.8% from 2002 to 2008. The number of patient admissions has been gradually increasing overall during the aforementioned period.

Patient Days

The total number of days patients spent in Minnesota's acute care hospitals remained relatively consistent between 2007 and 2008. Overall, patient days have been increasing slightly since 2002.

Average Daily Census

The average daily number of patients in Minnesota's acute care hospitals in 2008 was 7,146. Daily census counts include acute care patients only. Patients in the hospital for long-term, subacute/transitional, or swing bed care were not included.

Discharges by Age Group

Children from birth to age 4 had the greatest number of hospital discharges in 2008 with 91,865 discharges. These discharges also include births of 72,168. The patient age group with the least number of discharges were those aged 5 to 9, with 5,165 discharges.

Average Length of Stay

The average length of hospital stay has been decreasing overall since 2002. The average stay has decreased 0.04 days from 4.30 in 2002 to 4.26 in 2008.

Outpatient Registrations

The number of people being seen for outpatient services increased 27.2 percent from 2002 to 2008. Outpatient registrations include hospital services such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, same-day surgery, chemotherapy and the emergency room.

Emergency Room

There were 1,662,611 patient visits to Minnesota's emergency rooms in 2008. Of these visits, 295,640 patients were admitted as inpatients to the hospital.
